Over nine years ago, Chris Avery started the Knights involvement with The Salt Mine. Today, Bob Beasley, organizes our visits every third Saturday of the month. Generally he needs around 12 volunteers, to help with the food distribution, but during the Covid-19 Pandemic, Bob usually needs six Knights. Suzanne Hogan, Director of The Salt Mine, said that the name comes from the Matthew 5:13-16 where Christians are called to be salt and light to the world. Salt is used to enhance food and preserve it. At The Salt Mine their goal is to help the community with food and share the good news of Jesus. The Salt Mineserves about 700 families a month through their food pantry. Families receive both fresh and pantry items as well as frozen meats and offer daily bags of food to the homeless population. The Salt Mine has church services each Sunday at 10 AM. According to Suzanne, “The Knights of Columbus have been an incredible blessing to the Salt Mine! Their consistent support has helped us be a blessing in the community! It is fantastic when groups can band together to help others.”
In addition to volunteering our time every month, earlier in the year our Council 9202 donated $500 to The Salt Mine.
